Learn to navigate the world of the Canada Revenue Agency! This session is geared towards sole proprietorships and partnerships (versus corporations). The CRA is a valuable resource that is here to help your business succeed. The speaker for this session is Catherine May, a Liaison Officer with the CRA based out of Vancouver Island. You will hear about:

  • How and when you need to register your business
  • How to figure out your industry code
  • How to prepare your taxes correctly
  • Your rights and responsibilities for reporting business income and expenses
  • How tax deductions work and what is an eligible business expense that you can claim
  • What records you are required to keep and maintain
  • What to expect during an audit
  • Where to access resources and support, including the new one-on-one Liaison Officer service

In this hands-on session you will learn:

  • How to design an effective, professional looking ad for use on social media (bring your idea!
  • How to use Canva (a free online, easy to use design software)
  • Basic elements of design: font, colour, composition, language, etc.
  • How to source and use stock images
  • How to ensure your ads align with your brand and target your audience
  • How to use words well in social media posts

Suzanne Jolly is an engaging facilitator who develops creative learning opportunities that are focused, practical and accessible for a variety of learners. Suzanne brings a wealth of knowledge of how to reach different audiences online in social media, having worked for years in the non-profit and post-secondary sectors in both Canada and the US. Suzanne also runs her own consulting business and has helped small business owners build their online presence and develop strategic marketing initiatives. She’s inspired to help small business owners build their dreams! Suzanne also holds an undergraduate degree in Communications and a graduate degree in Education. If you come to a workshop with her, be ready to be kept on your toes—she brings her sense of humour and love of great adventure to everything she does. Everyone keeps saying you should be using social media but where do you start?

The presentation:

  • What exactly is social media?
  • Social Media Audit - where are you using social media?
  • What is your end goal for social media?
  • Determine where the audience is - what social media platforms are important for you.

Hands On Component:

  • A closer look at Instagram and Facebook.
  • Registering, creating a profile (or page), and a post.

What to bring:

  • The smartphone or tablet you use every day.
  • Business cards.

Karrine Magnussen holds over 10 years of experience helping business owners promote their products and services online. A handful of the Ecommerce companies Karrine has worked with since 1998 include: GreatAupair, TenMarks Math, Kidorable Children’s Wear, and List Planit.  As a digital designer with a background in online advertising, her skills start at brand identity and easily move into all forms of communication design,

  • Gain networking tips so that every interaction leaves a lasting, positive impression.
  • Learn how to showcase the best parts of your character and presence for a strong first impression.

Since the age of 19, Naomi Nicholson has been an entrepreneur and found a secret to success is being able to  adapt in every situation. She learnt the power of presence and how to effectively network so people want to talk to you and most importantly, remember who you are in a stack of business cards.

Naomi shares tips that will help in any social situation you find yourself in: marketing yourself, customer service or crisis recovery, making small talk in the elevator. She has been teaching workshops for many years and is a Certified SuperHost and FirstHost Customer Service Trainer.

2018 saw Secluded Wellness Centre celebrate their 7th year of Business, be Voted Best Massage Provider, and receive a Women’s Leadership Award. Naomi and her husband Ed just opened Chims Guest House which is Indigenous themed and decorated.
