Jowsey’s Furniture and Mattresses was founded in 1947 – some 70 years ago by current owner Jennifer Norn’s grandparents – Jack and Aili Jowsey. Back in the 40’s the business was more a general store selling and fixing radios, cameras, school supplies etc. Today the store is owned/operated by Jennifer who took over the business some 21 years ago from her parents – Brian and Frances Dodsworth. There are 6 employees with the Jowsey’s team including 4 sales staff and 2 dedicated to the door to door delivery service. Jennifer sees her staff as part of the community and is proud to run her business in a non-commissioned format which she believes is better for the corporate vision. The business focuses on selling quality furniture and mattresses and backs that with quick and efficient service should the need ever arise.
The store is located at 4957 Johnston Road at the corner of Gertrude so it’s easy to find with an entrance off both streets. They are part of a nationwide buying group – Cantrex which connects independent stores assisting them in being price competitive with the bigger players. Jennifer believes that her brand has been very successful both locally in Port Alberni but also attracting customers from all over the Mid-Island including Tofino/Ucluelet, Parksville/Qualicum and beyond. They are proud to have represented the La Z Boy brand for more than 50 years.
As part of Port Alberni, they participate in the Food Drive, Community Foundation (and the Jowsey Foundation), the Women’s Centre, and where ever they can help. Jennifer is a bookworm (trained as a teacher), loves to walk, play and coach badminton, and raise their 2 girls with her husband Mark. She loves Port Alberni, life is good in a small town with great access to the outdoors and sports. The Chamber of Commerce wishes to acknowledge the support that Jennifer provides to our brand throughout the year. She is quick to support any Chamber initiative!
