7:00pm: Ms. Shirley Culpin: Shirley Culpin’s career as a journalist began in 1971 at the Alberni Valley Times. Her career as a newspaper reporter, columnist, feature writer, freelance journalist and newspaper and magazine editor spanned many years and many locations, from the Alberni Valley to Whitehorse, YT. In 2006 Shirley and her husband Michael returned to the Island.  They now live in Qualicum Beach, where Shirley writes on contract for Tourism BC and where she and Michael manage their website at www.VancouverIslandBeyondVictoria.com

VancouverIslandBeyondVictoria.com.  is designed to introduce travellers and residents alike to the 'other' 11,997 square miles of the Island that are not consumed by Greater Victoria. One of the inspirations behind the launch of the site in 2012 was the knowledge of all the great 'stuff' there is to do in the Alberni Valley and the fact that so many people miss so much of it.

7:20pm: Ms. Carey McIvor - McIvor & Associates. Ms McIvor will speak to us about the current and future Waste Management Plans for the Alberni Valley. A very interesting presentation in the works!

Carey McIver, formerly Manager of Solid Waste for the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN), is a solid waste management specialist with over twenty five years of hands-on experience designing, delivering, and evaluating plans, policies, programs and facilities for waste diversion, recovery and disposal.

Under her leadership the RDN implemented an award-winning Zero Waste Program with an impressive disposal rate of 350 kg per capita from all sectors (70% diversion rate); retrofitted, re-developed and expanded an existing transfer station to achieve LEED Canada Gold certification; and, been an early adopter in landfill gas management practices, resulting in the creation of the Nanaimo Bioenergy Centre. Carey has achieved this success by collaborating with local stakeholders to develop ambitious and innovative strategies to create a sustainable community by encouraging Zero Waste

Since starting her own consulting firm in October 2013, Carey has collaborated with Maura Walker & Associates to undertake a project for the BC Ministry of Environment entitled Waste Reduction and Diversion in BC: Towards Zero Waste.  The goal of this project was to develop tools, information and guidance to support efforts by local governments in BC to reduce the generation and increase the diversion of construction, renovation and demolition wastes, and organic waste.  A reporting and verification procedure for waste disposal by regional districts was one of the primary project deliverables. Carey is currently engaged by the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District to assist in the review and implementation of the programs and projects approved in their 2007 SWMP.

7:40pm: Mr. Scott Fraser MLA Alberni Pacific Rim. We are looking forward to Mr. Fraser's presentation to the Chamber of Commerce. We thank him in advance for arranging leave from the Legislature for us that eveing.

Scott Fraser was first voted in as MLA in the constituency of Alberni-Qualicum in 2005. Four years later, he was re-elected in the newly-redrawn area of Alberni-Pacific Rim and was successful in retaining the seat in May 2013.

As a member of the Official Opposition Caucus, Scott is the spokesperson for Aboriginal Affairs & Reconciliation. He serves on the Special Committee to Review the Independent Investigations Office. Scott has also worked on Special Parliamentary Committees for Cosmetic Pesticides and Sustainable Aquaculture. Over his terms in office, Scott has introduced two private member bills: the Promotion of Safe Antifreeze Act and the Cave Protection Act.

While serving as mayor in Tofino during the late 1990s, Scott was instrumental in helping Clayoquot Sound gain its designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.  He also made contributions as a member of numerous boards and committees. These include the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District Board, the Clayoquot Sound Central Region Board, the Vancouver Island Regional Library Board, the Vancouver Island Health Board, the Tofino/Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism British Columbia.

Scott and his wife reside in the Regional District of Nanaimo, Area G.
