Chamber applies for Accessibility Grant

mclean mill

The Chamber of Commerce operates the commercial activities at the McLean Mill National Historic Site through an agreement with the City of Port Alberni. The terms of the agreement are specific to the Non-Historic Area of the Site including several buildings:

  • The Grand Hall
  • The refurbished in 2020 Gift Shop
  • The Main Office Building, and
  • The Building hosting all washrooms.

Our team determined after a walk-through with an Occupational Therapist who manages accessibility in Care-Homes in Vancouver that we needed to apply for this grant opportunity. If successful we hope to pave the main parking lot, pave or similar the paths to the Historic Site, improve the Courtyard using a similar product, install automatic doors on the aforementioned buildings and much more. A highlight of the application includes the potential for Internet Improvements, better signage, use of QR Codes or similar and really exciting is the inclusion of a large golf cart, with ramp, that would be used to tour the Historic Site.

We were thrilled to be endorsed by many organizations in the community led by Pacific Coast University an organization that focuses their attention on accessibility across the planet. The application was sent to the Federal Government on July 29, 2021. The Chamber hopes to learn of a successful application before the end of the year.
